Mutable Maps Part 1: Dungeon-Scale
During this last weekend’s Wandering DMs episode, Dan mentioned wanting a way of having overland maps that can change randomly. I don’t know how to do that in an automated fashion (yet), but the idea was extremely intriguing to me because I have had fun in the past with incorporating random elements into smaller-scale maps. This series will be about describing what I have done and musing over how to scale it up for overland use, hopefully coming as close as I can to Dan’s i
Workout Recap - Week of March 21, 2021
This was a bland week. Five workouts, none of them particularly special or memorable. So instead, I offer what's on my mind at the moment: "The monsters make me hide / Perhaps I'll eat myself alive / Internally, what is there left for me to be?" Sunday Type: Pass/Fail Uneven Push Ups - 1 set of 12, each side (pass) Stand-to-stand Bridges, one wall touch on the way up - 1 set of 5 (pass) Uneven Pull Ups - 1 set of 6, each side (pass) Bonus: none This was a frustrating day.
The Brass Fraternity (Part 5)
Part 4 Here’s the end result: link Since I’m not familiar with running Silent Legions games, there are probably some omissions and oversights in that. I tried my best to set out what I thought would be necessary, but imagination is no substitute for experience. If anyone tries this out and provides feedback, I’ll update the file (and provide due credit, of course). As for changes from what I’d written in the previous posts, the first thing that caught my eye was that there
Workout Recap - Week of March 14, 2021
I'm happy to be back up to five workouts for this week. Timing was a bit wonky for me on Saturday, so I pushed back the weekend challenge workout due to lack of faith in being able to give a representative performance, but otherwise, nothing too special comes to my mind for introductory commentary. Sunday Type: As Fast As Possible 4 sets of: 10 Pull Ups 20 Mountain Climbers (each side) 15 Prisoner Squats 20 Mountain Climbers (each side) Time = 7:15 Bonus: 5 handstand push up
The Brass Fraternity (Part 4)
Part 3 To recap, this is where the adventure had been left after last post’s efforts to flesh out details about the Brass Fraternity and Aleksandra Volokh: A: The PCs are invited to a convention with local media coverage by agents of Aleksandra. As they arrive, agents of the Brass Fraternity approach Georgia to make threats about repaying her loan. B-> Students at the convention recognize the agents as having been around the game room to look for students struggling to get f
The Brass Fraternity (Part 3)
Part 2 Last time, I put together the basic skeleton of the adventure structure, shown below: A: The PCs are invited to a convention with local media coverage by agents of the founder. As they arrive, agents of the Brass Fraternity stage a Crime targeting the founder’s agents. B-> C-> D-> B: A game room at the university. C-> D-> E-> A clue with obfuscated meaning C: A library at the university. B-> D-> E-> A clue with obfuscated meaning D: A secluded location where a local s
The Brass Fraternity (Part 2)
Part 1 Last time, I started working out an idea seed from which to build a Silent Legions adventure. Let’s continue with that, following along with generating some scenes that can be stitched together into a nodal adventure. I’ll assume it’ll be a basic 5-node funnel structure for now, but I’m open to changing that based on further inspiration. The first step is to roll up a Resolution scene. I’m not sure how much I want to consider a time limit, so I’ll roll once on each
Workout Recap - Week of March 7, 2021
I was dealing with a shortage of time (and an excess of rage) this week, so I did only four workouts. I'm happy with how they went, but I'll be looking to bounce back up to five in the future. Sunday Type: Pass/Fail Close Handstand Push Ups - 2 sets of 4 (pass) Shrimp Squats - 2 sets of 7, each side (pass) Isometric L-Hang - 2 sets of 8 breaths (pass) Bonus: 3 hanging grip flips (full cycles) Getting back to these workouts, I pushed myself a step farther along with my squats
The Brass Fraternity (Part 1)
A while ago, I made a couple of post mini-series, Walled Mounds of the Hive-Caller and Cursed Monastery of the Crocodile-Behemoth, where I rolled up random adventure details and stitched them together into something playable. Those were pretty fun (both to make and to use in play), so I decided to take another swing at it. I’ve also been more and more interested in Silent Legions lately, so I’m going to try taking the extra step of making it an adventure for a modern-day cos
My TTRPG Generic Minigame Mechanics
One of the great things about TTRPGs is that pretty much all of them allow players to try doing things that aren’t codified in the rules. With that, though, comes a need for ways of actually handling such attempts that don’t break the feel of the game. Often, these can be handled satisfactorily either by fiat or with a single roll, particularly for acts that don’t have much potential impact beyond whoever is involved directly. Sometimes, though, a situation comes up that i
