Brutal heatwave going on, which has continued into this week as well. Thanks, climate change.

Monday

Muay Thai class

The guest kru decided to focus on various options for countering after catching a round kick for this class. It's a pretty niche topic, I think, but sometimes it's worth zooming in on a specific thing to get a better handle on its nuances. Also, it was horribly hot today, so I was fine with just getting through anything. I was too dead by the end to stay for a second class, but the kru also canceled that due to the heat, so nothing missed.

Tuesday

Muay Thai class

This was a boxing day, featuring a mix of working on hand speed with simple bursts and working on stamina using extended sequences, including defenses and counters. I was making a conscious effort to focus primarily on my legs, and while I felt my movements definitely slow down as the class went on, I think I was able to keep consistently good engagement and drive. Then again, with the heatwave still going on, maybe I was just being lenient in my judgment.

Wednesday

Muay Thai class

This was a padwork class, back with the main kru leading it, working on building long sequences with a variety of strike types. I was partnered with a newbie who was struggling to hold pads safely, so I focused on my body control and being ready to keep them safe. On the plus side, they did seem to react well to the advice I gave them. No second class again because of the heat.

Thursday

Muay Thai class

This was a light sparring day, always a welcome thing when I'm unable to attend the regular sparring sessions. I went into it with a personal goal of rolling under at least 1 hook per round, but I only managed that about half of the time. On the plus side, it seemed like my boxing has improved significantly in general, as it felt like I was landing a higher percentage past my partners' guards than usual and that I was taking less than one clean punch per round on average, even if I was still relying far more on blocking than on evasion. There was no apparent compromise for this improvement, as my kick defense seemed to still be about how it usually is. Overall, it's a bit disappointing that I failed at my personal goal, but I'll keep working at that while appreciating the other signs of improvement.
